Over-The-Counter Vs. In-Office Teeth Whitening

Bright teeth can make our smiles look healthier and younger. Unfortunately, our teeth can be easily stained by a number of common foods and beverages such as red wine, coffee, tea, berries, and deeply-colored sauces. Use of tobacco products can also dramatically impact the shade and appearance of teeth.

Teeth whitening treatments are now widely available and can help remove stains and lighten the shade of your smile. With so many over-the-counter and in-office whitening treatments to choose from, patients frequently ask us about the differences and which is best for their teeth. Though over-the-counter products frequently claim to “whiten” the teeth, any product that simply removes food from the teeth may use this often-misleading label. Conversely, according to the FDA, any “bleaching” product must contain either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide – which can actively brighten the shade of the teeth.

While over-the-counter bleaching products can achieve results over time, in-office treatments are typically considered to be the fastest and easiest method of whitening. At Encinitas Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer take-home kits that utilize a professional grade bleaching gel, which is significantly stronger than most over-the-counter alternatives. In addition, we can use Zoom!® in-office teeth whitening to safely and effectively brighten your teeth by approximately eight or more shades. As an added benefit, the Zoom!® whitening gel can be customized to help minimize the tooth sensitivity that can result from other whitening techniques. With Zoom!® whitening, you can have a brighter, more youthful smile in about 90 minutes.
